News Item:
Reston, VA…………December 9, 1999……..David
Smith, the computer programmer who rose to international notoriety
when he was arrested for creating the Melissa computer virus,
pleaded guilty to causing in excess of $80 million in damages to
North American computer users. ICSA which provided Federal
prosecutors information that was instrumental in prosecuting this
case, estimates the Melissa virus caused up to $385 million in
damages to North American businesses.
The $385,000,000.00 was cost in damage and
lost productivity for just one virus. Thousands of virus
writing hackers around the world continue to produce malicious and
invasive viruses every day. They take aim at your accounting
data, your client data, your confidential product data and anything
else that can be stolen or destroyed.
Your business falls into one of three
categories:
Wide Open - Not using virus protection,
just hoping for the best and dealing with the worst when it happens.
Semi-Safe - There is no such thing.
Safe - Have implemented company wide virus
protection with automatic virus definition updates that are
regularly distributed to all workstations. Any new computer or
visitor connecting to the network will have virus protection
automatically installed before network resources are made
available. The anti-virus software will not allow employees to
turn off or alter the virus protection settings. Last, the
installation is monitored to insure proper day to day operation.
